Recent Recall Announcements

FCA US is voluntarily recalling 2013 – 2016 Dodge Darts sedans equipped with automatic transmissions to replace their shift cable bushings.

The FCA campaign number is V34.

An FCA US investigation discovered certain vehicles are equipped with a cable bushing that may degrade after prolonged exposure to high ambient heat and humidity. Should degradation occur, it may prohibit the driver from shifting gears.

The Company is unaware of any related injuries or collisions, but such circumstances raise the risk of unintended vehicle movement. Therefore, customers are reminded to follow the vehicle’s operating instructions before exiting the vehicle. These instructions include shutting off the engine and engaging the parking brake.

In the extremely rare event that the cable bushing becomes disconnected while driving, brake function remains, which helps preserve driver-control.

FCA US LLC has issued, in the interest of Customer Satisfaction, a campaign to inspect and, if necessary, replace the cooling fan modules in certain 2015 - 2017 Jeep Renegades and Ram ProMasters; and 2016 – 2017 FIAT 500X vehicles.

The engine cooling fan may experience excessive friction and loads between motor bushing and shaft due to inadequate lubrication content in the bushing, out of specification cylindricity and sub-standard radial strength, leading to bushing wear. This can result in fan motor noise and eventual failure of the fan motor. Failure of the fan motor can cause the engine to overheat and possible engine damage/failure due to overheating.

The FCA campaign number for this Customer Satisfaction Notification is V54.

What You Need to Know

FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 1.66 million trucks in the U.S. to help prevent occupants from inadvertently moving the vehicles' gear-shifters out of the "park" position.

The recall is limited to vehicles equipped with shifters mounted on their steering columns. Those with rotary-dial shifters or floor-mounted shifters are unaffected.

Affected are certain 2010-2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups; 2011-2018 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs; and 2016-2018 Ram 3500 chassis cabs with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of less than 10,000 lbs. Certain 2009-2018 Ram 1500 pickups are also included in the campaigns, but heavy-duty trucks represent the majority of affected vehicles.

The FCA campaign numbers for this safety recall are T79 and U11.

Parts are currently available to remedy this condition on ALL model year trucks . Any authorized Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge or RAM dealer can repair affected trucks, free of charge. To do this, the Brake Transmission Shift Interlock function will be tested and replaced if necessary. Additionally, the Body Control Module will be reprogrammed.

VINs are currently searchable on our recalls.mopar.com website.

An FCA US review of field data led to the discovery that Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) may not function properly if subject to specific high-temperature conditions for prolonged periods. The conditions are consistent with those that occur when there is protracted brake-pedal application while a vehicle is idling in park.

If BTSI becomes disabled, a vehicle's shifter may be moved out of park without brake-pedal application, or the presence of a key in the ignition. In such circumstances, a vehicle may exhibit inadvertent movement - if its parking brake has not been set, as recommended in FCA US owners' manuals.

The Company is aware of seven potentially-related injuries and a small number of potentially-related accidents.

In the meantime, FCA US urges all customers to use their parking brakes, as recommended in their owners' manuals, and to ensure that child occupants are not left unattended.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) locking pin on your vehicle may become stuck in the open position. A BTSI locking pin stuck in the open position may allow the transmission to be shifted out of PARK and to any gear position without depression of the brake pedal and/or without the key in the ignition (or without the key being present, if equipped with Keyless Enter-N-Go). The ability to shift the transmission out of the PARK position without a key in the ignition, or a brake pedal application, may increase the potential for an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in a vehicle crash or injury without prior warning.

Engaging the parking brake every time the operator exits the vehicle is important, and something FCA US warns operators to do in the owner's manual. Engaging the parking brake, when the vehicle's transmission is in the PARK position, will help prevent inadvertent or sudden movement of the truck if the recalled component becomes disabled.

In 2015 and 2016, Takata Corporation advised the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a significant number of its driver and passenger airbag inflators that contain a non-desiccated phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant (an ammonium nitrate propellant without a chemical drying agent) are defective.

Prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity and high temperatures may cause the propellant to degrade.

Activation of degraded non-desiccated ammonium nitrate may cause an inflator rupture during normal airbag deployment events, possibly propelling metal fragments through the vehicle cabin that could result in serious injury or death.

Activation of degraded non-desiccated ammonium nitrate may cause an inflator rupture during normal airbag deployment events, possibly propelling metal fragments through the vehicle cabin that could result in serious injury or death to both the driver and vehicle passengers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please visit the Takata Airbag Inflator Recalls page for details regarding affected vehicles.

NHTSA and Takata are prioritizing future recalls based on when the affected inflators are likely to pose an unreasonable risk to safety, considering time, temperature and environmental moisture. Therefore, the recall plan has been structured with phases and three geographic zones based on time in service and climatic conditions. For more information, visit www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/

NHTSA and Takata are finalizing plans to initiate multiple recalls for all affected vehicles that will be released in phases beginning in May 2016 and continuing through 2019. Registered owners of involved vehicles will be notified by FCA US as each additional Takata recall is filed and phases are announced between May 2016 and 2019.

FCA US recommends that you regularly check recall applicability using recalls.mopar.com or www.safercar.gov. You will need to input your 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) to obtain specific information about your vehicle.

FCA US has completed the process of phasing out the use of Takata frontal non-desiccated PSAN airbag inflators as of June 23, 2016. Current model year vehicles produced before this date are not subject to a current recall. Based on multiple independent investigations and NHTSA's independent expert, NHTSA has concluded that the non-desiccated Takata frontal airbag inflators do not pose an unreasonablerisk to safety until they reach a certain level of propellant degradation after long-term exposure to environmental moisture and fluctuating high temperatures. NHTSA and Takata are prioritizing recalls based on when affected inflators are likely to pose an unreasonable risk to safety, considering time, temperature and environmental moisture, which depends in part on a vehicle's operating location. According to NHTSA's current order, all of these components will be recalled by the end of 2018.

The Company is recommending that affected customers avoid using cruise control until their vehicles are equipped with the upgraded software.

FAQs

When the Cruise Control feature is being used, the system, in response to driving conditions such as varying road grades, will automatically initiate acceleration, as needed, to help vehicles maintain driver-selected speeds.

FCA engineers determined that in certain vehicles, if such an acceleration were to occur simultaneously with a short-circuit in a specific electrical network, a driver could be unable to cancel cruise-control. However, if this sequence of events were to occur, cruise-control acceleration can be overpowered by the vehicle’s brakes.

The vehicle may also be stopped by shifting it into neutral and braking accordingly. Regardless of the mitigation strategy, the vehicle may be placed in park once it has stopped, at which point cruise-control is cancelled.

No. A unique sequence of events must occur before a customer has a problem. They include acceleration, as happens automatically with cruise-control, and a simultaneous short-circuit in a specific electrical network. Nevertheless, we issued this recall out of an abundance of caution.

The Company is recommending that affected customers avoid using cruise control until their vehicles are equipped with the upgraded software.
